EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When it comes to big, desirable classic British bikes, there aren’t many that can match Norton’s Commando. It was the top of the tree, and the end of a very long line of slow evolution. When Japanese manufacturers joined the party in the late 1960s with ever-bigger and ever-slicker machinery, it was the Commando that fought the good fight on behalf of the British Empire. But although it was fast, sweet-handling and way-cool, the big Norton was ultimately steam-rolled by the momentum of affordable, quiet, and leakproof bikes from Japan. Most of the old Brit bikes that are still on the road today have had most or all of their foibles resolved with modern-day technology, making modern ownership of old bikes a lot easier than it used to be. This glorious 750 of Ian’s harks back to the earlier years of the Commando, when it really was king of the castle. Great stuff.
