EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: If you thought the “street scrambler” was a modern creation, well, here’s the proof of your folly. Way back in the late 1960s and early ’70s, Honda offered it’s mid-size 350-twin in a road version (CB350), off-road version (SL350), and half-way in-between version (CL350) which offered high pipes, wide bars, long(-ish) suspension and off-road styling but mostly on-road competence. They were all great bikes and they sold by the squillions. I read an article once in which it was claimed that, in 1969, Honda sold more SL350s than Kawasaki sold motorcycles. I have no idea if that’s true, but I do know the 350 twin engine was reliable as an axe, strong as an ox, and (with a redline of 10,500rpm!) as fast or faster than Honda’s CB350 Four. Come to think of it, both the CL and SL would make great retro mid-size adventure bikes, for those of us who can’t bring ourselves to buy a GS BMW or Africa Twin (and couldn’t pick one up if we were to drop it). At 156kg, with 30-odd horsepower, and a claimed top speed of 100mph, the CL would be a wonderful vintage machine for soft off-road duties. Add a set of knobby tyres and off you go! Judging by the pics, this bike of Jim’s looks like a beauty. Gotta love those pipes …
