EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: A surprisingly rare machine this one, and a bike that was ahead of its time. The R80ST was basically an R80GS — BMW’s wildly successful big-bore dirt bike — redesigned for mostly street work. It seemed a good idea at the time, and it was — but buyers weren’t ready. While the 1980s motorcycle world was accustomed to road bikes tweaked for the dirt, the idea of a dirt bike tweaked for the road was a bit out there. As a result, the ST was not a big seller. In fact, they were only made from 1983-85, and only about 6,000 rolled off the line. Nowadays, bikes that are most comfortable on the road but quite ok bumping down a gravel road are hugely popular — and a lot of fun; and that’s the R80ST.
