EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Aprilia invented a whole new class of bike when they released the Tuono. Not much fairing to speak of, handlebars higher and footpegs further forward than a sports bike, highway friendly but hooligan-ready. And a very big, very fast engine. We would probably call it a “super naked” nowadays, a term that would make most people think about big-bore Ducati Monsters but makes me think about Elle McPherson. The early Tuono engine is the same as that found in Aprilia’s top sports bike of the time, the RSV1000 Mille and, unlike usual practice, Aprilia decided they would not tune it down for near-naked duties. (Hey, who wants to be tuned down for near-naked duties? And can someone please stop me from thinking about Elle McPherson?) Despite its high-spec engine, the Tuono has a reputation for being surprisingly comfortable, practical and reliable; perfectly capable of highway duties. As a side note, I’ve seen this bike in the flesh and I know the owner takes exceptionally good care of his machinery.
