EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: From back in the day when Ducati was loyal to its L-twin roots, producing a big-bore and medium-bore version of its pure sports bikes, the 749 and big brother 999 were stylistic trend setters and truly wonderful machines. If you add up the trophies, the 999 was apparently the most successful race bike in Ducati’s history (remember Troy Bayliss?). But if your weekend riding is more likely to be on public roads than designated race tracks you’ll likely be happier on the 749. It does not have the horsepower of the bigger bike of course, but it’s a whole bunch more fun — mostly because it doesn’t have so much horsepower. It seems slightly obscene to be able to pick one up for less than $10k, especially with fresh tyres and engine belts so she’s ready to head for the hills and the corners. A marvellous example of Ducati’s glorious years in the early 21st Century.
