EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: If I were shopping for a street-and-track sports bike in the sub-$15k bracket, I’d be hard-pressed to name a more desirable machine than Ducati’s wonderful 848. Marketed alongside Ducati’s big-bore 1098, the mid-size 848 was adored by moto-journos of the day, most of them saying they actually preferred it to the 1098. Narrower tyres, fewer kilograms and a still-very-rapid but more manageable engine added up to more fun and it was said to be as fast or faster, provided your favourite road or track had lots of corners. It was also surprisingly street-friendly, with the smooth engine making life more comfortable in stop-and-go city traffic (even though it was pining for a good caning in the hills). And, being a Ducati, it offered street-cred and exotic sex appeal that few others could match. This bike of Adrian’s looks like a wonderful example, offering low miles and, of course, it’s red!
