EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Once upon a time, someone thought it might be fun to put a set of fat road bike tyres on a dirt bike. And they were right. Big wide handlebars and an upright seating position deliver an aggressive but comfortable pose, perfect for some loopy shenanigans and more than the occasional wheelie. The ‘motard’ was born. Manufacturers quickly joined the game and started building them from the factory – and then someone bumped up the loopy factor with bigger engines, so the ‘super motard’ was born. What we have here is Ducati’s ‘hyper motard’ – all those fun things from the motard evolution, with the addition of Ducati’s marvellous 1078cc four-valve V-twin engine, working through a six-speed gearbox. Weighing in at a fraction under 180kg, the Duke’s 90 horses don’t have much to push around so the word ‘hyper’ is an excellent fit. Pommy bike website Motorcycle News describe the Hypermotard as “a very comfortable motorcycle”, which sounds not very Ducati-like, hey? And also: “It handles like a 600 supersport motorcycle and has the kind of brakes a club-level motorcycle racer would kill for.” High praise indeed, for a bike that delivers about as much fun as you can have with your boots on. This one of Ian’s looks like a minter, with very low mileage and selling at about half the price of a new one.
