EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When it comes to exotic high-end race-bred machinery, two Italian marques run in parallel — Ferrari and MV Agusta. No, I’m not quoting an MV promotional blurb (well, not knowingly anyway), and nor am I picking up on the apparently true story that Ferrari designed the initial four-cylinder engine that would go on to power the big-bore 21st Century MV sports bikes (it was, supposedly, very close to being half a Ferrari V8 – right down to the very Ferrari-esque radial valves). My assertion goes back to the two companies’ very roots. Both the Ferrari and Agusta families originally built and sold their machines to the public to raise money so they could go racing. Little wonder then, that both have evolved as sporting machines with hefty price tags. And MVs racing success, in the early days, was breath-taking. From the late-1950s to the early ’70s, MV utterly dominated the sport with 17 consecutive 500cc world championships. The company did not have an easy time financially though, creating marvellous machines that were often too expensive to be commercially viable. Even the glorious 750 Sport America, now massively sought-after by collectors, sold just 540 units. A big part of the reason was the asking price — around $10k when a Honda Four was about $3k. (No surprise that Honda sold 400,000 CB750s in its initial 10-year run, hey …) Even through its many changes of management and ownership, MV Agusta has not lost its love for mechanical beauty and the best performance and handling that money can buy. This glorious F4 of Allan’s was one of the high points in a model run that, frankly, didn’t have any low points. Respected Pommie bike site MC News said this of the MV Agusta F4 1000: “(It) blends a monster engine, God-given handling and heart-aching beauty to be possibly one of the most desirable two-wheeled creations of all time.”
