EDITOR TERLICK: Launched to mark the 90th anniversary of BMW’s first motorcycle, the R32, the RnineT added a couple of ingredients that are missing from many modern retro bikes — namely power and handling. Yes, it might look cool in an old-fashioned kinda way, and the tech is one step back from modern sports bikes, but this is not an old codger in hip clothing. With its 1200cc engine and up-to-the-minute frame, suspension and brakes, the big Beemer is fast and handles beautifully even from a modern perspective. That air-and-oil cooled boxer motor is good for more than 100hp, making it a very different proposition to, say, a modern Triumph Bonneville or Royal Enfield. It’s closer to a big Ducati Monster but with a more solid nod towards history. The bike was also intended from the get-go to appeal to customisers, and Andrew has leaned into that space with some very nice kit. An excellent example, combining old-school style with new-school performance. Nice.
