EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Harley-Davidson is one of the top-selling brands in Australia. While the motorcycle industry no longer releases brand-by-brand sales data (let alone model-by-model), the last time I saw a full set of numbers Harley had sold more road bikes here than any other brand — yep, even more than Honda. Of course, H-D has been making road bikes longer than anyone. Childhood friends Bill Harley and Arthur Davidson made their first bike in 1903, way back when motorcycles were a new thing. That’s 122 years ago, and the company has been pumping out new machines the whole time — so it’s reasonable to assume they’ve learned a thing or two about making bikes that work, and bikes that sell. Take a close look at a modern-day Harley and you’ll see they are beautifully made. They are also comfortable, functional, reliable and a whole lot of fun to ride. Truth is, they sold very well even when they weren’t so well made. People loved them anyway, because they were always stylish and always cool. And then there was the whole generation of men who were first introduced to motorcycles by WLA Harleys either during or after World War II, so they saw the H-D brand as synonymous with motorbikes — the top of the food chain, so to speak. Harley makes a mind-numbing range of bikes these days, but they stay loyal to that marvellous big V-twin engine, favouring torque over horsepower, with lashings of comfort and style. The Fat Bob lives in the middle ground between sporty Sportsters and highway tourers, delivering a slick city cruiser which can handle the highway as well. With a bunch of functional extras and at less than half the price of a new one, this bike of Neil’s looks like a great example of the breed.
