EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When Suzuki unleashed the first Hayabusa in 1999, all anyone really cared about was the fact that it was the fastest motorcycle the world had ever seen. How fast? Real fast. Stupid fast, really. With a top speed just a smidgen north of 300kmh, it was fast enough to ignite a frenzy of politicians and safety nazis across the globe who convinced motorcycle manufacturers (well, most of them) to limit their high-performance bikes to a top speed of less than 300kmh. It was silly really — it’s not like 299kmh is safe or anything. But both the ‘Busa’s performance and the resulting unholy row ensured there wasn’t a motorcyclist on the planet who didn’t know about this amazing machine. Lots of folks wanted one, and lots of folks bought one. Fast-forward to today (that’s a quarter of a century, just quietly) and there’s now an historic perspective to the mighty Hayabusa. Apart from being as fast as the Starship Enterprise, it was (and still is) a whole bunch of other things. Perhaps most surprisingly, it’s civilised. You really can ride one to work, every day, and not need a chiropractor by Friday. The engine is smooth and gentle at low revs, quite happy tonking along at suburban speeds. It’s flexible, such that you can use it as a commuter, dragster, race bike, highway bike; even a tourer. Sure, it’s not a Gold Wing, but it can take you (and your friend) for a very long ride. You’ll have no trouble finding luggage and other niceties to fit, and you’ll have no trouble finding people who reckon they’re one of the greatest motorcycles ever made. This Gen2 of George’s looks like a beauty, with low mileage and high pamper.
