EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: A few years ago, just for fun, I bought myself a 2007 MV Agusta Brutale 910R. For those who don’t know it, the 910R was a 909cc four-cylinder naked road bike, weighing in at just 185kg and pumping out 136 horses and 72 foot-pounds of torque. It was, without a word of a lie, utterly bonkers. The acceleration reminded me of Star Wars’ Starship Enterprise. The bike felt like it actually preferred to travel on one wheel (mostly the back one, but hey …) And if ever there was a bike that willed me to lose my licence, this was it. And gosh, what fun! Riding the Brutale on the road was like being 16 years old again, and being let loose with a motocross bike on a golf course. Which brings me, with just a 14-year hop, skip and jump, to the 2021 KTM Super Duke 1290R. Boasting a ditto-Brutale featherweight 189kg, the loopy Austrian V-twin smacks the horizon into your helmet with 180 horsepower and 104 ft-lbs, boosting my MX-bike-on-a-golf-course fantasy to a whole new level. The big KTM’s much-loved and much-used LC8 engine is a torque monster, providing arm-wrenching thrust in any gear at almost any revs, while the frame, ergonomics and suspension deliver remarkable comfort (especially for such a who-gives-a-flick piece of machinery). It also offers a whole bunch of technology which supposedly makes it that bit harder to wrap yourself around a tree or a Mack truck. Mind you, I did roll my eyes when I read one (probably young) bloke comment on another website that, with all the technology (and I quote): “I can’t crash, I’ll never die …” Hmm. Good luck with that, sonny. Anyhoo, this bike of Andrew’s look like a near-perfect example of the Super Duke, complete with a whole bunch of cutting-edge top-shelf upgrades. Just don’t go thinking they’ll make you invincible. Some days you’re the windscreen, and some days you’re the bug, right?
