SELLER SAYS:  A five year restoration finished three years ago. Has completed a number of rallies but then became hard to start. Spent $900 on a magneto rewind and now starts well. EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: A wonderful piece of British motorcycling history here, and a bike that Ajay boffins know very well. The AJS company, a family affair created by Arthur ‘call-me-Jack’ John Stevens, produced very successful road and race bikes from as far back as the 1910s. The company’s early success included the 350cc ‘big port’ which was an overhead-valve engine for the racers but only available to the public as a side-valve. In 1925, AJS unveiled a 500cc version of the OHV big port racer and immediately grabbed headlines with a then-blistering performance at the Isle of Man; lapping at 68.97mph, it was the fastest TT lap in history. So excited at the performance, the Stevens family made the decision to make the 500cc OHV engine available in a road-going machine on sale to the general public. That bike was the G8. This example of Keith’s looks like a glorious example, fit for club runs and/or man cave duties … or, if you’re game, find a race track and see whether you can match that record-breaking 68.97mph lap speed.
