EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: There’s something addictive about early BMWs. Maybe it’s the gloss black paint, interrupted by white pin-striping like an expensive suit. Maybe it’s the distinctive Earls front end, which made its final outing on a BMW with this model, the R60/2. (Later bikes in the /2 manufacture run came with those new-fangled telescopic units, apparently because American buyers believed telescopic forks were better on rough roads.) Or perhaps it’s that boxer engine, poking its jugs out proudly like a risque young woman parading her first bra. But I think it’s got something to do with the exclusivity of the BMW marque. Despite being downright leisurely in acceleration, Beemers from the 1960s and ’70s commanded high prices and high esteem. They were a gentleman’s machine, capable of long distances at high speed and in comfort, like no other bike of their time. As a consequence of typical German quality control mixed with a mostly well-heeled cohort of owners, BMWs also earned a reputation for reliability and longevity. But even allowing for all that, I doubt there would be many BMW owners from 1968 that thought there would be examples of their beloved R60 as good as this, doing the rounds and changing hands more than half a century later. This bike of Grant’s looks to be an exceptional example of an exceptional model, with an impressive history of maintenance and restoration. Beautiful.
