EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: The Norton Commando is one of history’s great motorcycles. Unveiled in 1967 and sold from ’68, the Commando was named by Motor Cycle News as it’s bike of the year every year from 1968 to 1972. While it is possible that the folks at MCN were a little biased towards British bikes, history has proved equally fond of the Commando. With its upright big-bore twin cylinder engine — with twin carbs of course — the bike’s lineage stretches way back into British motorcycle history. In fact, you can still find people who reckon two pistons are plenty, and so is 750cc. Truth be told, they’re right. While an old Norton won’t hold a candle to modern machinery in a drag race, it was plenty fast enough to take on the best from Japan in the early 1970s and was a better handler too. With the introduction of the isolastic frame (rubberised engine mounts), the Commando spared its rider from much of the vibration that early twins had imposed. Sadly, Norton and the rest of the British bike industry was knocked to bits by the mid-1970s — but not before it generated some glorious machines. This lovely Roadster of Damien’s looks like a great example that’s ready to ride. Great stuff.
