SELLER SAYS: A very authentic 1970s survivor here. Rare 1972-only five-speed 650. (Earlier Bonnies were all four-speeds; later ones were 750cc). I bought it as a non-runner about five years ago. It had apparently broken down 20 years earlier and had stood under cover ever since. I stripped the engine right down to the crankshaft (sludge trap was all-clear) and put it back together again with new seals, new gaskets, new rings, and a cylinder hone. Everything else checked out fine. Despite my efforts, the old girl still leaks oil from the push-rod tubes and tappet covers. Old Triumph guys tell me: “Yeah, they do that.” Many new parts including both tyres, drive chain, clutch (springs, plates and basket), points, coil, plug leads, oil & air filter, new speedo (actual mileage is unknown – the speedo was missing when I bought it), rear shocks, fork seals, and probably other stuff I’ve forgotten. The bike has a bunch of period-correct modifications including Lockhart oil cooler, external oil filter, Joe Hunt magneto, over-sized header pipes, Mk2 Amal carbs with pod air filters, 4-inch-over forks, a genuine Triumph king-queen seat (plus a regular seat; both in good nick) and, of course, a fully functioning cigarette lighter because if you didn’t have a cigarette lighter on your 1972 Bonnie you was a pussy, right? And it has the last of the marvellous Twin-Leading-Shoe front brakes as well. The bike is not licensed but has previously been licensed in Western Australia. I’m offering this bike for sale for one week only at this firm price to see if there’s a buyer in the market right now, because I’ve spotted another bike I’d like to buy. This bike has a left-side brake and right-side gearshift. Test rides will be pillion-only unless you can convince me you have recently been riding a bike with right-side gearshift. (I don’t want you crashing my bike or breaking your neck.) This is not a shiny restoration, but a warts-and-all survivor with a few imperfections and charm by the truckload. Young people call it patina, I believe. It runs very well and sounds like an old Bonnie should (a bit rattly and a bit loud). It starts first kick (see video), and all the lights work except for the oil dummy light and the little speedo light which shouldn’t be hard to fix if you must.
