EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: It’s a curious fact of moto-design that first-variant models almost always win the hearts and souls of riders (and eventually collectors). Perhaps it’s a result of those first-variants being nearest to the concept designers who have the eye of an artist, just slightly blunted by the pragmatism of the engineers. Two or three variants later — by which stage a host of riders, dealers, accountants, regulators and journalists have all had a whack — the arguably-improved “new model” invariably arrive smoother, safer, cheaper to build and, well, bland by comparison to the original creation. And so it is with the Moto Guzzi LeMans. Yes, even later models (I’ve owned a couple of late-1980s MkV 1000s and loved them) were and are lovely machines, none of them match the soul of the original 1976 LeMans 850. Originally conceived on the race track, the LeMans had a painfully long gestation partly because Moto Guzzi and Benelli shared the same owner in the early 1970s, Alejandro de Tomaso, and he didn’t want a Guzzi sports bike competing directly with the six-cylinder Benelli Sei. But when it finally landed the LeMans was a stunner. Plenty of performance, excellent handling and, perhaps even more importantly, it was just plain gorgeous — and on that front there was only fellow-Italian marque Ducati that could compete. This stunning bike of Gary’s perfectly captures arguably Moto Guzzi’s greatest moment of glory, when it pulled the covers off one of history’s most beautiful machines.
