EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Wow. Now this is a find. One of our favourite bikes from the 1970s, Laverda’s triple-cylinder 1000cc Jota was a big, ballsy blaster, over-engineered and strong as an ox. Said to be the first production motorcycle to exceed 140mph, it was actually created by English brothers Roger and Richard Slater. The Slater brothers recognised the strong bones of Laverda’s relatively docile (and brilliantly-named) 3C, and souped it up so the big triple could really boogie. (Actually, the appropriate dance is the jota, of course). The Jota was a rocketship and, in complete contrast to most high performance bikes of its era, the faster it went, the better it handled. I’ve read one report which said the Jota was simply not happy under 70mph, but was glorious from 90mph upwards. The folks at Laverda headquarters thought the Slater boys were brilliant, and pretty much replicated the Slater bikes to make the factory-built Jota. With so few kays on the clock, and having been fettled by Laverda specialist Italbrit, this one’s a rare opportunity indeed.
