SELLER SAYS: Have you ever dreamed you could time travel back to the early 1980s, pick up a pristine first-series Mike Hailwood Replica, and bring it back to 2026? Well, with this bike, your dream has come true. Absolutely stunning example, completely rebuilt from the ground up by none other than Mike Soderland, the owner of renowned Australian Ducati specialist Gowanloch Ducati, and travelled a careful 3,000km since. Genuinely looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Fitted with Koni shocks and Conti exhausts, as all the good ones were back in the day. Yes, you could use this as a regular ride bike, but it really belongs in a boardroom or loungeroom. The bike is not licensed and would need some minor fettling to be ridden regularly.
I recently asked Mike for his recollection of the rebuild, and here’s some of what he said:
“As with all my resto’s, there was no expense spared to bring the bike back to a standard where I’d be happy to say I did it! Obviously all the gearbox and main and cylinder head bearings where replaced and I think the big end was fine so it just got all new rollers and cleaned out the sludge traps and trued it back up. I think the pistons were good too and I just installed new liners into the barrels and then had them rebored to suit the minor wear on the piston (this is a common practice to retain the original crank/piston balance). The motor was in a couple of fruit boxes when I got it, and there was a bit of light rust on things that I recall having to spin a few things up in the lathe and polish off with fine wet/dry paper. While writing this I recall that the top gear set had the typical half missing tooth off 5th layshaft gear and damage to the mainshaft gear, so it was replaced. The cylinder heads are all stock (valve sizes and ports) and would have probably got new exhaust valve guides and seats cut and valves faced and Desmo’s re-shimmed as per a usual rebuild. I don’t believe it needed a new clutch and as with my own ’76 900SS I’m riding at the moment – I just washed it up and re-oiled it and reinstalled it and adjusted it all up properly and can’t fault it. The chassis was all fresh paint and bearings and seals etc in the brakes/forks and of course new tyres, chain, sprockets and the paint was all redone on the tank and fairings etc. The carbs are all original, rebuilt as again they had very little wear. I believe the exhaust headers are re-chromed and the cross-over and genuine Conti’s are new from the guys in Germany who reproduce them these days.”
