EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When BMW turned the off-road market on its head by winning the 1981 Paris-Dakar rally with a twin-cylinder R80G/S, every man and his camel stood up to take notice. A big twin, off-road? What the heck? Suddenly, bikes that had been previously considered too big and heavy for off-road work became not only credible, but popular. What’s more, folks started to notice that, actually, some of those bikes were not really so big and not really so heavy. Case in point, this bike. Betcha wouldn’t have guessed that this Italian V-twin was lighter and faster than a Yamaha XT500, and had an extra (6th) gear to boot. The Moto Moroni Camel and it’s little 350cc brother Kanguro were already popular bikes in Europe, renowned for their spirited high-revving off-road ability more than their performance on the tarmac. This bike of Michael’s looks like a marvellous example, and would make a stylish and exotic alternative to an early ’80s Beemer, XL Honda or XT Yamaha. Cool.
