EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When BMW made the bold decision to take on Harley-Davidson (and everyone else) by building a cruiser, they came up with a fascinating machine that ticked the critical ‘cruiser’ boxes – seat low, bars high, pegs forward, big torque rather than horsepower, and a whole lot of nakedness to show off not only the engine, but the frame too. What they did not build was a Harley look-a-like. No sir-ee. No-one on the planet is going to mistake the R1200C for a Hog, or for anything else. You’ll not find that big boxer engine and Telelever front suspension anywhere else and, didn’t anybody tell BeeEm headquarters that cruisers are meant to be painted either black or, er, black? It also differed from the cruiser flock by having better ground clearance than most, better suspension than most, better brakes than most, and a very funky pillion pad that flipped up to become a rider’s backrest. (I thought Buell invented that idea with the Ulysses, but BMW were several years earlier.) And it worked. While road testers in the day scratched their collective heads and argued over the styling, they agreed it was a wonderful piece of kit. One American article I read even suggested this bike had “expanded the definition of a cruiser”. Nearly 30 years since its release, the R1200C is still one on its own, and a marvellous bike for someone who wants that laid-back cruiser gait without the usual Marlon-Brando-in-black-leather attitude. Very cool.
