EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: A lovely piece of Italian beautifulness here – and a proper late ’90s sports bike as well. Heavily influenced by American Guzzi whisperer Dr John Wittner, the 1100 Sport was released as an affordable alternative to Dr John’s motorcycle legacy, the Moto Guzzi Daytona. For those who don’t know the story, John Wittner was a mild mannered dentist who loved motorcycle endurance racing and knew a thing or two about Moto Guzzis. He built a team and a bike, went racing – and won. His hot LeMans caused so much of a sensation that Moto Guzzi hired him to help the factory design and build a top-tier sports bike. The result was the Daytona that came with, among many other things, an eight-valve engine, solo seat, complex frame, and a huge price tag. Moto journos and riders with deep pockets adored the Daytona, but mortals just couldn’t afford it. So Dr John and Guzzi rolled out this bike – the Sport – as an encore. The engine was a four-valve, there was a pillion seat, the frame was more mainstream, and the price tag much more modest. But the biggest surprise was the performance. The Sport handled superbly at speed and was just as quick as the Daytona. In fact, some tests found it was even quicker. (Check out the Cycle World article at https://magazine.cycleworld.com/article/1995/12/1/moto-guzzi-sport-1100) This bike of Mike’s looks like a beauty; well maintained, well-loved, and well-preserved; perfect for an existing Guzzi tragic or someone prepared to become one, and equally suited to a collector or weekend rider. Great stuff.
