EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: A boxer-twin BMW supermotard? It sounds like a oxymoron. Sure, BMW has joined the high-performance brigade in recent years but supermotards are more than just fast and good handling. They’re, well, hoon machines — crazy fast city bikes, designed for uncivilised behaviour on two wheels (or one, if no-one’s looking). When BMW released the 1170cc Megamoto, many a jaw did drop. Based heavily on the HP2 Enduro (HP2 meaning high-performance twin), the Megamoto was similarly endowed with lots of power and dirt-bike ergonomics but was even lighter, even more powerful and had serious street attitude. Moto-journos at the time were taken aback by the big Beemer, as much for its audacity as its performance. Its nearest obvious competitor was the Ducati Hypermotard, an equally out-there European with virtually identical big-bore twin-cylinder performance spec. But the BMW was produced in much smaller numbers and came with a higher price tag, making it even more exclusive than the hooligan Duke. (Hit the online markets and you’ll find plenty of Hypermotards for sale, but very few Megamotos.) This bike of Jai’s looks like an excellent example of a rare and desirable high-performance BM. Nice.
