BMW HP2 for sale

SELLER SAYS: Delivered new by Autoclassic Motorad, this highly sought-after endurance racer, the BMW HP2 Sport, is a bike that makes BMW boxer fans, and fans of beautiful bikes in general it has to be said, go all weak at the knees. Launched in 2008 after the firm ran a ‘special’ R1200S in the 2007 World Endurance series, the HP2 Sport is the third member of the HP2 (High Performance two-cylinder) family, following on from the Megamoto and Enduro. And you have to say, BMW saved the best for last. A simply stunning bike with an attention to detail that means you can spend ages just soaking it all in, the HP2 Sport was the first boxer model ever to run double overhead cams and for a long period of time was also the most powerful incarnation of the motor BMW produced. Although not technically limited in its production, not that many HP2 Sports were made due to their high price tag and they have recently shot up in value because of this exclusivity. If you like an air-cooled boxer engine and want to turn heads, the HP2 Sport is a sublime machine in so many ways. Contact Chris on 0407 474 011 (Myaree – Perth, Western Australia)

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: I wonder how surprised were the folks at BMW when their first off-road boxer, the R80GS, turned out to be a sales winner. After all, it was a pretty big call to take a rather large road bike and turn it into a dirt bike. It was 1980, and I remember thinking the GS was absurd and that it would never work, despite the fact that I actually knew a guy on the south coast of Western Australia who had put a set of knobby tyres on an old boxer — probably an R60 although I can’t recall for sure — and used to ride enduros on it. I thought he was absurd too. (Hi Gordon.) Mind you, I was on an XR500 Honda in those days, not much less absurd in heavy going off-road! The R80GS was a huge success and has evolved over the past 45 years (cripes!), getting even bigger but even more loved. Today’s R1300GS is the king-daddy of adventure bikes, with specifications that read like a sports bike, including 145 horsepower and a 0-100kmh acceleration of 3.4 seconds. Unbelievable. But there’s something else about the R1300GS spec sheet that catches my eye: a road-ready weight of 237kg. Holy Moses. That’s 22kg heavier than my 1975 R75/6 and 100kg more than my old XR500! Enter the HP2. Launched in 2005, the High Performance 2-cylinder captured BMW’s Paris-Dakar learnings and included a trellis frame, WhitePower telescopic forks, a more-than-adequate 105 horsepower from it’s 1170cc engine, a top speed of 210kmh and, and, weight for it, a dry weight of 175kg. To save you doing the maths, that’s more than 60kg lighter than a current R1300GS. In the real world, that 60kg will make the HP2 a whole lot easier to manage when the roads get proper lumpy. This bike of Chris’s looks like a beauty, and will appeal to anyone who loves the boxer motor and the open bush track. Great stuff.
