EDITOR TERLICK: A couple of years ago, after spending most of my motorcycling life on classic and vintage bikes, I decided it was time to have a taste of modern machinery. After a little research, I began a journey that saw my ageing bum on the seats of several contemporary machines ranging from an MV Agusta Brutale 910R and Buell XB9R Thunderbolt through to a Ducati 996. I also bought two big BMWs – a 2007 BMW K1200S and a 2011 BMW K1300R. This bike of Michael’s is effectively a blend of those two Beemers, having more or less the 1300R engine and more or less the 1200S running gear, admittedly a smidgen newer and up-specced to BMWs HP (High Performance) standard. My MV and Buell were both heaps of fun, but I’ve got to say the BMWs were the eye-openers. Gob-smackers. If you’ve ever wondered how far motorcycles have come on their journey of performance and function, you could pretty much stop right here. They are just amazing. The technical advancements over the past couple of decades has enabled manufacturers to deliver a blend of speed, comfort, reliability and practicality that was previously the stuff of dreams. You want a bike to to go touring with your partner? No problem. You can load this bike up, factory panniers and all, and push a button to tell the suspension that you have a pillion and luggage on board. You want a bike to ride to work? Sure. This bike purrs like a kitten, it’s civilised, and the ergonomics are traffic friendly. Oh, so now you want to go to the race-track or drag strip? Here, hold my beer. How does 0-100kmh in 2.8 seconds grab you? (I know where it grabbed me.) Quite possibly the most competent motorcycle ever made, and a credit to the people who design and build them.
