EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Ah, the memories. Quite a few years ago, my wife and I got to spend a day riding the south coast of Western Australia aboard a Ural sidecar outfit. (Click here to read our report.) It was a hoot. Getting used to riding a sidecar was a challenge (and, briefly, very scary) but once we got the hang of things we found ourselves pondering the notion of travelling long distances on three wheels. The Ural is a reincarnation of old-school motorcycling but, unlike most modern reincarnations, it’s a remarkably authentic low-tech reincarnation. Yes, there are a few mod cons to satisfy the safety police, but for the most part the Urals are old-school in the true sense of the term. If you follow Peter’s link to the article in BikeEXIF (which we recommend), you’ll discover he bought and customised this machine to carry him, his dog and his surfboard to the beach — in style. His Ural looks magnificent, and we can hardly imagine a better way to make such a pleasurable journey. Lovely.
