EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: Reincarnated from the ashes in 2011, the Indian motorcycle brand is one of the oldest in history. It’s generally accepted that Indian and Royal Enfield were both born in 1901, Triumph in 1902 and Harley-Davidson in 1903. Indian was the early star, building more bikes than anyone else in the first decade or so of the 1900s. But it all went south in the late 1940s and the company ceased production in ’53. The Indian name was handed around like a spliff for a few decades before someone at American snowmobile manufacturer Polaris had a brainwave. Polaris had launched a line of cruiser motorcycles, badged ‘Victory’. They were very good machines, and a worthy competitor for cruiser behemoth Harley-Davidson. But they couldn’t match Harley’s entrenchment in the American psyche, forged over a century of popularity. And so Polaris bought the Indian name, did a pivot on design to blend historic styling with modern tech, and Indian was back on the big stage. Using the old Indian names like Scout and Chief and design cues that harked back to the good old days — just as Triumph did with the Bonneville — Polaris did a wonderful job in marketing and manufacture. Today’s big Indians are beautifully made and, like Harley, boast world-class comfort and thumping great motors that feel and sound like they’d be at home in a Mack truck. This Chief Classic of Terry’s runs an 1811cc v-twin engine which I know is a marvellous thing. My wife and I spent a weekend on an Indian Roadmaster back in 2017 with the same motor, and loved it, while Cycle World named the Chief Classic as ‘Best Cruiser‘ in 2015.
