EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: I have a vivid memory, quite a few years old now, of me and my Moto Guzzi LeMans playing sports bike out the back of the Perth hills. I was in full Casey Stoner mode, quite sure no-one had ever taken this corner as fast as I was doing, right now, just as no-one had ever taken the previous corner as fast I had just done. My super-hero fantasy had just reached fever pitch when I heard it — a very loud exhaust, getting louder and closer. Looking into my rear vision mirror, expecting nothing less than an Aussie or Yankee V8 muscle car, I saw the black-helmeted, black-T-shirted, heavily-tattooed Harley rider approaching at speed. Coming out of the corner, I straightened up just as the Harley moved across to the wrong side of the road and roared past me, disappearing into the distance. How embarrassment. I’ve since decided that it was probably Casey Stoner, on holidays in Perth, having borrowed a mate’s H-D. But it probably wasn’t. Point is, Harley-Davidsons have very large and powerful motors that are quite capable of travelling at proper speed. And a few of them — like the XR1200X — have ergonomics, ground clearance and suspension to enable that big fast motor to be ridden to its potential. No, it’s not going to be as quick or accomplished as a pure Japanese sports bike or a big Ducati — but it will be plenty capable for seriously fast fun in the corners, and certainly for overtaking delusional old Moto Guzzi riders. This one of Kevin’s looks like a beauty, and I’d love to be able to head off into the Perth hills on one! Way cool.
