EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: It’s quite remarkable how many built-for-function low-cost bikes survive for many years. Bikes like this marvellous little Honda were made as cheap-to-run city commuters, with a brief of taking the owner to work and back, and maybe down the shops for a bottle of milk. Low-tech and built with a close eye on keeping costs to a minimum, I doubt whether even Soichiro Honda himself would have expected an H100A to be still taking someone to work and popping down to the shop for a bottle of milk more than 40 years after manufacture. But here it is, not only still functional but licensed and looking amazingly fresh. I found a road test online from back in the day (click here to read it) which, apart from saying the H100 had undeniable sex appeal, reveals that little two-stroke motor delivers fuel consumption of better than 80mpg. That means, apart from being a very cool old-school city bike, it boasts an even better green credential than today’s paint-me-green-and-I’ll-save-the-planet e-bikes. And I’ll bet my fake-cotton polyester socks this Honda is still going long after most of today’s e-bikes are on the scrap heap, despite the 43-year head start! Very chic.
