In the middle of the forest, in the middle of winter

The Bike Shed Times and the Ironstone Adventure Riding Club (IARC) are pleased to announce The Bike Shed Times 2022 Capel River Classic Motorcycle Show & Shine Day.

The event will be held in conjunction with the IARC’s 45th Capel 200 Trail Bike Rally at 1688 Goodwood Road, Capel River Western Australia, on Saturday 25th June 2022.

Event promoter and The Bike Shed Times editor Peter Terlick said the event would be “a celebration of classic motorbikes”.

“There will be trophies on offer for bikes entered in the Show & Shine, but this event is more than a competition; it’s a celebration — an opportunity for the West Australian motorbike community to get together in the middle of the forest, in the middle of winter, enjoy a pie and a coffee in a beautiful location, and put our favourite classic bikes on display for everyone to see.

“Even if you don’t want to enter the Show & Shine competition, bring your classic bike out for the day anyway and let us all admire it!”

Ironstone Adventure Riding Club spokesman Jeremy Connor said the club was delighted to be hosting the event alongside the 45th running of the Capel 200 Trail Bike Rally.

“The Capel 200 has become a classic in its own right since starting out as a round of the West Australian State enduro championships way back in 1977, and it seems fitting for us to celebrate our 45th anniversary milestone with a display of WA’s best classic motorbikes.

“We are especially pleased that the Show & Shine is encouraging dirt bike entries, with all categories open to dirt bikes and one category dedicated exclusively to dirt bikes.”

The new event has been welcomed by the Shire of Capel.

Shire President Doug Kitchen said: “The Shire of Capel is a proud long-term sponsor of the Capel 200 Trail Bike Rally and we are really excited to see the expansion to include this unique showcase event.

“It is fantastic to welcome visitors for this event as well as expand the experiences for our local riders and spectators in our region. The event fosters a dynamic, diverse and strong local economy by showcasing unique events we have here in the Shire of Capel.

“We can’t wait to join in the celebrations for this 45th anniversary milestone and check out the displays of WA’s best classic motorbikes!”

Among the 100 classic motorcycles expected to be on display will be Peter’s custom carbon fibre 1982 Ducati 900 MHR (Mike Hailwood Replica) and Jeremy’s 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 — two of motorcycling’s most memorable and collectible classics.

The Ducati MHR was launched to commemorate the legendary Mike Hailwood’s extraordinary win at the Isle of Man in 1979. Peter’s bike was completely restored by renowned Ducati specialists Gowanloch Ducati in Sydney and fitted with carbon fibre 900SS bodywork.

The twin-shock 1981 Maico 490 is considered by many enthusiasts as the greatest dirt bike of all time, and Jeremy’s bike is a marvellous example — and still in use as a competition bike.

Other early entries include a 1954 Ariel 1000 Square 4, 1973 Ducati 750 Sport, 1973 Yamaha MX125, 1975 Yamaha YZ125, 1976 Yamaha YZ125, 1948 Vincent HRD Rapide 1000, 1984 Ducati MHR 900, 1983 Kawasaki KZ750 twin, 1975 BMW R90S, 1985 BMW R80GS and a 1986 KTM 350 GS Enduro.

The Show & Shine event will have trophies up for grabs in ten categories, including ‘Best in Show’ selected by judges and a ‘People’s Choice’ awarded by popular vote.

The other eight categories will be:

  • Pre-1961
  • 1961 – 1971
  • 1972 – 1982
  • 1983 – 1992
  • Off-road
  • Japanese
  • European / UK
  • American

The IARC will be providing event marquees for many of the bikes to be displayed undercover.
