Japanese motocrosser and ’66 Ford Mustang shine among the stars

A late-1970s Japanese motocross bike and a pair of BSAs separated by more than 50 years have taken the top three awards at The Bike Shed Times Capel River Classic Motorcycle Show & Shine 2024.

While a 1960s American icon took out the inaugural The Bike Shed Times Classic Car Award, it was Rob Winzar’s stunning 1979 Honda CR125 that captivated the judges. Rob’s other entry, a 1974 CR125, won the pre-1975 dirt bike class to give him a clean sweep in the off-road sections.

Rob’s diminutive ’79 Red Rocket beat off a star-studded line-up of more traditional collectibles, while several customised machines also left the day with trophies and the admiration of an appreciative crowd.

Busselton car-and-bike enthusiast Dan Talbot was another star of the show. His 1971 BSA Rocket 3 took out two trophies, including Best In Show (People’s Choice) and 1945-1971, while his 1966 Ford Mustang won the public vote and thereby the Classic Car award.

Stace Hart became the event’s first female trophy winner. Her beautifully restored 1974 Bultaco Alpina finished runner-up to Rob Winzar’s 1974 Honda CR125 in the pre-1975 dirt bike category.

Two previous Best In Show winners —  Lex McKinley’s 1972 Moto Guzzi 850 and Lloyd Gibson’s 1975 Norton Commando — took the top two spots in the 1971 – 1975 class.

We gave the old Nikon a workout to catch these shots. For full results, scroll down beyond the pics.

Ross Oliver’s 1971 Harley-Davidson FX Superglide
Dave Summers’ 1915 BSA Model K.
Richard Blackman’s 1955 Velocette Scrambler.
Rob Winzar’s 1979 Honda CR125.
We couldn’t help ourselves– of course there’s a calendar! Click HERE to order yours.
Dan Talbot’s 1966 Mustang.
Michael Ognenis’ 1934 JAP-powered Morgan. Is it a car or a bike? Who cares anyway. It’s way cool.
Peter Harding’s 1982 Yamaha RD250LC.
Lex McKinley’s 1996 Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport.
Vee Two’s 1978 Moto Guzzi 850 LeMans
Ian Poole’s custom 1976 Jawa/CZ 250.
Lex McKinley’s 1972 Moto Guzzi 850.
Lloyd Gibson’s 1976 Norton Commando.
Richard Blackman’s 1964 Triumph Mountain Tiger Cub.
David Alderson’s 1928 P&M Panthette. No, we’d never seen one before either. It’s a 250cc V-twin, and David tells us he believes there are only 12 survivors. This is one of two that originally sold into New Zealand.
Dave Summers’ 1930 Matchless Silver Arrow.

Stace Hart’s 1974 Bultaco Alpina (above) and that’s her accepting her trophy (below) from The Bike Shed Times Editor Peter Terlick.

Rob Winzar’s 1974 Honda CR125.
Steve Riddell’s custom 1986 Honda XR200.
Martin Wilkes’ custom 1982 BMW R100RT didn’t feature among the trophy winners but attracted lots of discussion. The steampunk styling went down well among the punters.
Many of the trophy-winning bikes arrived on trailers, but plenty of top bikes made the trip to Capel River under there own steam. Bernard Legg’s very nice 1974 Honda CB750 was among the latter group.
We didn’t know whether to register Michael Ognenis’s 1934 J.A.P.-powered Morgan as a car or a bike. In the end, we decided it was a bike, but Michael parked it among the cars. Either way, it was very cool.
Shawn Vieceli’s took three Ambassadors to Capel River. Two of them were beautifully restored while this one was still wearing it’s 74-year-old paint job. We liked it a a lot.
Nev Hurring brought half a dozen bikes from his wonderful collection. This 1972 Honda XL250 was typically excellent.
The motorbike carpark overflowed into the camping area. There were many glorious old bikes among the modern stuff, including this stunning 850 LeMans.
And, parked under a tree, this magnificent Triumph Hurricane.
Laverda specialist Italbrit Classic Motorcycles joined the event as a sponsor and exhibitor. Lovely bikes!
The Rustic Rally was on again for riders who preferred mud and revs to spit and polish. Entrant bikes (and riders, to some extent) ranged from fairly old to really old, and from very-off-road Husqvarnas to not-so-much Honda Fours.
