TRIUMPH has launched its 2017 Street Triple line-up,  featuring a new 765cc engine and a bunch of clever-as electronic gadgetry — but Perth buyers will have to wait another month or two before they can see the new bikes up close and personal.

The Street Triples continue to evolve sport-wards, rather than getting soft and friendly as the range approaches moto-middle-age. The top-of-the-line RS variant has gained 90cc and 16hp, and lost 16kg — so it’s reasonable to expect it’ll be quicker and more agile than any previous Street Triple and will close the performance gap with the full-balls Daytona 675 (our favourite Trumpy and our favourite middleweight sports bike).

There are three models —  S, R and RS — and then a couple of variants. The R model will come in a ‘low’ version for people with limited lower limb length, and there will be a 660cc LAMS-compliant variant of the S model for people with limited experience or compromised chronological componentry.

Triumph says the new 765cc engine is “derived from the Daytona”. We’re not entirely sure what that means, but it confirms a less-pork more-sport philosophy.  Even the base S model now boasts 111hp, which is 4hp more than the first-model Daytona managed back in 2006 and more than enough to get yourself in trouble (and ensure you can keep up with your mates on their middleweight Japanese sports bikes).

The RS comes with a lap timer and a quick shifter (for clutchless upshifting), so there’s no doubt that the marketing team want you to think about the racetrack while you’re waiting for the Albany Highway traffic lights to turn green. It also gets top-shelf bolt-ons, with an Ohlins rear shock, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres, and Brembo brakes.

The electronic gadgetry includes selectable modes ranging from a road-or-rain option on the S to your choice of five modes on the RS: road, rain, sport, rider programmable, and track. (The different modes fiddle differently with power delivery and ABS and traction control settings.)

The new Street Triples aren’t expected to start arriving in Perth until March. Nathan Slehofer at JCS Motorcycles in Burswood says the RS is due here March/April, the R in April/May, the R Low in May/June, the S in April/May, and the 660 (LAMS) May/June.

There’s no word yet on pricing although, for what it’s worth, American Sport Rider Magazine has reported the base S model will sell for $US9,900 in the USA, land of King Trump.

Specifications are down the bottom of the page.

Until the bikes arrive, you’ll have to make do with Triumph’s press pics:

CAPTION: Top-of-the-line RS gets Ohlins rear suspension, lap timer, Brembo brakes, and 121 British horses. Love those three headers.
CAPTION: Rear-end styling says ‘Barbagallo’.

CAPTION: On-board computer talks through the dashboard.
CAPTION: R and RS both get Brembos.

CAPTION: Pillion will need nerves of steel and a very firm arse.
